old guy inspiration series part 2 - Mr. Buck

I am always impressed/inspired by adult humans who have figured out how to make a life in this world and maintain their commitment to surfing. Andrew Buck is a history teacher in Ojai who surfs Rincon every day after school. In addition to impressive backside tip skills, Andrew also possesses an extensive vintage longboard collection and a surf mat. Here's some pictures of him on the later, the first two taken by his buddy Seth de Roulet, the last by me.

Bling That Boogie!

As many of you know, we at PizzaTime prefer the boogieboard over all other forms of wave-sliding vehicles--especially those lame hulls and surf mats.

Not only can you throw sweet 360s on a boogieboard, you can also accessorize! Check it:

god bless america

why do uneducated white people in america share the political interests of powerful corporations?

why do conservatives do a better job of protesting health care reform than we did protesting the wars in iraq and afghanistan, the wall street bailout, the patriot act, guantanamo prison, destruction of the environment, etc.?

best bali drive(r)

if you ever find yourself in bali, make sure to find Ketut Ciri to be your driver. renting a motorbike can be fun but is very dangerous in Kuta. Ketut drove us around and it was one of the highlights of our trip. he's funny, kind, knowledgeable, trustworthy, and he really liked when ry guy told embarrassing stories about me.

Serious Fun

Boogieboarding is totally awesome. Gilda might try to tell you that surf mats are all the rage right now, but watch this video and try to tell me that anything is cooler than boogieboarding--I dare you:

Inspiration Series part 1 of 5: Pauliwog

It's high time for Pauliwog to get the shout-out he deserves. On any given swell all year long, Paul Pantelas is just as likely to be cheating fives along Malibu's hectic green walls or clandestinely exploring the outer fringes of California's expansive wilderness-surf empire. Hailing from Newbury Park, CA, Paul has used his hometown as a stragetically positioned springboard to attack surrounding surf locales as the changing seasons dictate. Ask Paul or any other Conejo Valley moondoggie and they'll tell you how they manage to beat the landlocked blues: "35 minutes to Malibu and 35 minutes to Rincon."

Armed with a unique quiver of custom micro platters and down-railed speed machines designed by his long-time friend Bob-O of Boss surfboards, Paul applies a stylishly functional point-and-shoot approach to the various point waves he frequents. He's really one-of-a-kind; basically, if you find yourself anywhere between Malibu and Point Conception and you've just watched a guy in his 40's pull off a 20+ second noseride on a 5-10" 12-channel single fin, then it was probably the Pauliwog doin' his thing.

Paul's passion for low-tide pointbreaks is rivalled only by love for his family: father to two beautiful and hilarious little girls, Paulie excels equally well as both a soccer dad and underground trim master. His ability to balance all of life's meaningful aspects while maintaining such a rich surfing lifestyle is more than inspirational and why I'm proud to call Paul Pantelas my friend.

Swimming Cities of Serenissima

All info and pictures are all off the website and flicker!

"The Swimming Cities of Serenissima is a fleet of three intricately hand-crafted vessels that will navigate the Adriatic Sea from the Karst region of Slovenia to Venice, Italy in May of 2009. Designed by the artist SWOON, the floating sculptures are descendants of the Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea (Hudson River, 2008) and the Miss Rockaway Armada (Mississippi River, 2006 and 2007). The Swimming Cities of Serenissima are built from salvaged materials, including modified Mercedes car motors with long-tail propellers. For Swimming Cities, SWOON will collaborate with 30 artists from the United States, including OBIE award-winning playwright Lisa D'Amour. As the Swimming Cities move toward Venice, the crew will collect and install keepsakes in an ark-like cabinet of wonders that will be on display on the boats when they arrive. Once in Venice, the boats and crew will offer intimate performances that incorporate music, shadow puppetry, and story. The project is produced with the assistance of Deitch Projects, Paper Monster and Black Rat Press"

RISE UP, HIPPIES!! HELP SAVE CALIFORNIA!!!

Trestles isn't the only place in California worth saving!! California's state parks are UNDER ATTACK by the Governator!

Arnold recently announced plans to TERMINATE our access to 220 of California's 279 unique and diverse state parks in order to remedy the state's budget crisis. There have gotta be better ways to trim the fat than by denying millions of Californians the enjoyment of these hallowed grounds*.

*this includes Gaviota State Park, a place of utmost importance to all of us here at PizzaTime

For the entire list of slated closures, visit the following link: http://www.calparks.org/takeaction/closurelist.html

We must act fast and furiously about this issue. Tomorrow the Legislature's Budget Conference Committee will hear public testimony on the proposal to eliminate state funding and close 220 of our parks. However, reliable sources close to PizzaTime have informed us that the decision will be made and gates will be locked within 2-4 weeks' time.

This time around sweet drum circles, 3-day jam-band festivals, or donating your 2-foot dreadlocks won't be enough to make an impact. We need to send so many angry letters that Arnie is hospitalized from f*ing papercuts!!

Your local stomping grounds are likely to be under the chopping block, so take action by visiting the CA State Parks Foundation website and follow their simple instructions for contacting your local, state, and federal representatives: http://ga3.org/calparks/parkclosures_takeaction.html

*If Gaviota State Park means anything to you or anyone you love, I am urging you write a letter, story, blog post, song, haiku, limerick etc. about it and send it to the following people:

Today

"About a dozen members of Troop G simultaneously turned around 180 degrees, aimed and fired their weapons into the crowd in the Prentice Hall parking lot. The 1975 civil trials proved that there was a verbal command to fire.

A total of 67 shots were fired in 13 seconds. Four students: Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder were killed. Nine students were wounded: Joseph Lewis, John Cleary, Thomas Grace, Robbie Stamps, Donald Scott MacKenzie, Alan Canfora, Douglas Wrentmore, James Russell and Dean Kahler. Of the wounded, one was permanently paralyzed, and several were seriously maimed. All were full-time students."

Nicaradical

2 summers ago I was fortunate enough to find myself "working" at a surf camp in southern Nicaragua called Giant's Foot Surf. The opportunity came about through some close friends from UCSB who had signed on for tours of duty over previous seasons. My responsibilities involved waking early (sometimes as early as 0400) to prepare coffee and scrub pelican crap off the boats while nursing champion hangovers, driving eager wavefarers to exotic surf locales up to 3 times daily, surfing my brains out alongside them and praying they wouldn't break their necks in the whomping beachbreak barrels, occasionally making the trek to Managua to pick up/drop off guests at Sandino Int'l Aeropuerto, but mainly I had assumed a supporting role amongst a cast of party coaches devoted to showing these vaqueros de las vaccaciones a damned good time--all the time.

The following photos recount some of our descent into madness:

For thirsty souls in search of new exhilarations, this enchanted shredtopia provides a dizzying array of oceanic overtures, terrifyingly terrific traffic tribulations, and an overabundance of pure, unadulteraded love. Primo surf season starts now and extends well into Septiembre, meaning that light offshore breezes are the norm and swell never seems to drop below shoulder high. To book your upcoming bro-journ, get in touch with Carol via www.giantsfoot.com. You'll be glad you did!
